India’s external sector may seem stable at present but by no means should it be regarded as foolproof. The IMF has said the state of the global economy may entail “complex policy tradeoffs” making the policy landscape very complicated.
The “financial vultures” who are tightening the noose of indebtedness in order to gain still greater advantages at a historic moment when humanity is suffering sanitary, humanitarian and ecological disasters, must be denounced.
Financial Times, the leading international business newspaper, has in a statement denounced lockdowns and all other public health measures that impinge on the production of profits but have saved millions of lives in China.
Rajendra Singh, the Waterman of India, says that 70% of Indian rivers are dry and dead, while the other 30% have nitrates, acid, chromium and other heavy metals flowing in them. Their water is not compatible with drinking or bathing. In fact, they are causing cancer in large populations.
Overall, the picture is bleak. Environment is given a few token sops, while in fact financial allocations continue to fuel an economy that is fundamentally unsustainable. The country’s natural resource base will continue to be devastated, especially by the massive increases in mega-infrastructure.
A new draft agreement between Argentina and the International Monetary Fund has eschewed austerity. It will allow the Argentine economy to grow while the government continues its efforts to reduce poverty and gradually bring down inflation.
We need a socialist planned economy that can implement a long term plan to make the transformations that are needed for our very survival: a rapid transition off fossil fuels and a restoration of ecosystems to draw down carbon from the atmosphere, restore the water cycle and cool the climate.
Under the distressing times of COVID-19, the Rajasthan Budget 2022-23 guarantees 100 days of employment for families in urban areas. However, the Central government has not paid heed to demands for such a scheme and has even reduced allocations for MGNREGA.
The understanding is that everything Hindu is Indian and cultural, while Muslim and Christian practices are not intrinsically Indian, they can never be culture, they will remain narrowly religious.
At a time when India seems to be ready to hand over its railways, highways, ports and pipelines to private hands on lease, these frauds come as a rude reminder of how the government is gambling with the savings of ordinary citizens.
