A recent report from Oxfam points the finger at the wealthiest individuals for causing climate change through their individual carbon footprints as well as their investments in polluting industries. But what is missing from this report is that the system of capitalism is the root cause.
We need a socialist planned economy that can implement a long term plan to make the transformations that are needed for our very survival: a rapid transition off fossil fuels and a restoration of ecosystems to draw down carbon from the atmosphere, restore the water cycle and cool the climate.
The UN Emissions Gap Report released on Dec 9 points out that the 1% richest people on the planet are responsible for emissions equal to that of the poorest 50% of the world’s population.
