Given the severe shortage of coal supply from CIL at present, and states being asked to buy imported coal at three times the cost, it is imperative that the PM conducts a serious inquiry into what went wrong with the government’s 2016 plan to eliminate coal imports by 2020.
India’s external sector may seem stable at present but by no means should it be regarded as foolproof. The IMF has said the state of the global economy may entail “complex policy tradeoffs” making the policy landscape very complicated.
As per the CMIE, India’s LPR has further fallen to 40.15% last month. This means 60% of employable people in India have fallen off the job market. Other Asian economies like Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam etc. have over 60% employable people actively looking for jobs.
