The founding fathers of the US Constitution feared and hated the concept of democracy. They derisively referred to it as “tyranny of the majority.” The constitution that they wrote reflects this, and seeks to restrict and prohibit involvement of the people in key areas of decision making.
India today, is enveloped in darkness! As the nation embroils itself from one issue to another, the burden is felt by the ordinary citizen, as never before and in more ways than one. In these dark times, the people of India cry out in one voice, from the depths of their being “Let there be Light”!
The most intriguing question with regard to Liz Truss’ resignation as the prime minister of Britain after a mere 44 days in office is this: what is it about her economic programme that the “market” (read “finance capital”) found unpalatable?

The Socialists had been a significant force in American politics before they were so ruthlessly crushed in the 1920s. If the Socialist Party hadn’t been so hobbled, maybe they would have pushed the mainstream parties into creating a stronger social safety net that people today take for granted in countries like Canada or Denmark.
Fascism is again ascendant. The far-right politician Giorgia Meloni is expected to become Italy’s prime minister after elections on Sunday. Extremism is the political cost of pronounced social inequality and political stagnation. Demagogues, who promise moral and economic renewal, vengeance against phantom enemies and a return to lost glory, rise out of the morass.
We don’t know if China will succeed in overcoming its immense ecological contradictions. But rather than worrying about China’s struggle to create an ecological civilization, I worry with it, and with the struggles of the Chinese people as a whole.
The large-scale protests against the Iranian government over the custodial death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who was arrested by the country’s notorious “morality” police for allegedly violating the strict law on headscarves has reportedly spread to about 80 cities and towns.
They believe they own everything – and owe us nothing.
