Sri Lanka entered its 17th loan arrangement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 20 March 2023. This new financing has been trumpeted as Sri Lanka’s only lifeline to salvage its sunken economy — but it will do nothing of the sort.
The IMF programme in Sri Lanka is devastating the common people of Sri Lanka, especially the most vulnerable and marginalised among them.

Decades of looking to the IMF for salvation has yielded only crises. Sri Lanka’s economic crisis demands urgent relief measures for a desperate citizenry and a new, self-sufficient model of development.
