The US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks recently announced the “Replicator Initiative.” Among other things, it would involve producing “swarms of drones” that could hit thousands of targets in China on short notice. Call it the full-scale launching of techno-war.
The Pentagon has rolled out its proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2024: a stunning $842 billion. That’s the highest level requested since World War II, except for the peak moment of the Afghan and Iraq wars, when the United States had nearly 200,000 troops deployed in those two countries.
U.S.-supplied weaponry has fuelled conflicts, enabled human-rights violations, and helped destabilize not just individual countries but entire regions.
The Pentagon is just one element in an ever more costly American national security state. Adding other military, intelligence, and internal-security expenditures to the Pentagon’s budget brings the total upcoming “national security” budget to a mind-boggling $1.4 trillion.
For the US political leadership, when it comes to selling American weaponry and thereby benefiting American military corporations, more or less anything except (so far) nuclear weapons seems to go. It doesn’t matter how they might be used or against whom.
The murder of George Floyd has finally shone a spotlight on the need to defund local police departments; the same sort of spotlight needs to be shone on the American military machine and the damage it’s been doing across the world.
