Several renowned Indian citizens have written to the Union Health Minister cautioning him against tabling the draft Public Health Bill in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, saying that it is straightforwardly violative of the Fundamental Rights of the citizens of India.
In 2018, PM Narendra Modi was awarded the United Nations ‘Champion of the Earth’ award. This, despite the fact that among the first things the Modi government set to work on after assuming office for the first time in 2014 was dismantling the laws that protect the environment.
The proposed amendments go against the National Mineral Policy, 2019; they also undermine the principle of intergenerational equity, the principle by which the government must cater not just to the well-being of the present generation but also of those still to come.
