Anyone familiar with Assam’s political history would know that disdain for Miya Muslims holds great sway over the dominant Assamese psyche. It serves as a scaffolding to other issues (like welfare and development), quietly deciding which button they press on polling day.
In Assam’s detention centre for suspected foreigners, the state wages an attritional assault against the lives of the detained. But that is only one part of a majoritatian fantasy to create a sinister ethno-racial utopia.
It’s been 40 years since over 2,000 Muslims were slaughtered in Assam’s Nellie town. The ghosts of Nellie continue to haunt India even today every time we overlook an incident of hate speech or let perpetrators of violence to go scot-free.
