We hear a lot about work in the media but hardly ever about what effect it has on the minds and bodies of those who do it, and why it is organized in a special way, radically different than in most of human existence.
Farmers are again moving into the protest space. With new dimensions being added to their earlier movement: the Agnipath scheme and the contentious Electricity (Amendment) Bill-2022 have added to the pent up anger on the minimum support price (MSP).
People are crying, embracing, yelling, as the streets fill with joy. Horns honk and people dance in the middle of avenues. They can’t believe that the news traveling by word of mouth, tweet to tweet, news show to news show, is really true. As the minutes and hours pass, they confirm that it is true: This June 19th they—the Nobodies—have won.
Mahatma Gandhi said about Basaveshwara, “Eradication of untouchability and dignity of labour were among his core concepts. One does not find even a faint shade of casteism in him. Had he lived during our times, he would have been a saint worthy of worship.”

Karl Marx gets you. In the mid-19th century, he argued that the whole working class is exploited by the capitalist class. The entire point of capitalist enterprise is to accumulate more wealth by systematically stealing a portion of the value workers create. This process is called exploitation.
July 19 is a day of celebration in Nicaragua: the anniversary of the overthrow of the Somoza dictatorship. Ignoring the remarkable transformation that has taken place in the lives of the Nicaraguans under the Sandinista government, the international media continue to dish out lies.
His vision of working-class unity with an anti-caste core may or may not be realisable, but it is an important line of argument and action at the very least.
