Indian authorities are downplaying inconvenient macroeconomic facts so that they can celebrate high GDP figures ahead of hosting the G20 summit. But in covering up the growing struggles faced by the vast majority of Indians, they are playing a cynical and dangerous game.
Gandhi said, “The BJP’s vision believes that power should be centralised, wealth should be concentrated and the conversation between … people of India should be suppressed. And so, this is the fight between two visions. I like to term it the fight between Mahatma Gandhi’s vision and Nathuram Godse’s vision.”

In February this year, the Uttarakhand government was granted permission to continue mining the rivers flowing through the state’s hills and forests, sidestepping critical legal requirements to conserve forests and protect rivers.
If an amendment to a 54-yr-old law is passed by Parliament in its ongoing session, you will not be able to—without a birth certificate—enrol for education, get a driving licence or passport, be a voter, get married, get a government or public-sector job. It will make life harder for millions.
The government claims that the PM’s health insurance scheme has ‘saved crores of families’ from such expenditure. But there are no data to support this claim, and studies indicate India’s most marginalised people are not benefitting, while insurance companies are.
What’s chilling is the cynicism of the top man running the country. Why is the prime minister unmoved?
