India celebrates the 75th Republic Day on January 26. On this day, 75 years ago, in 1950, the Constitution pledged equality, regardless of gender, caste, religion, class, community or language. It is a fitting time to revisit this poem by Rabindranath Tagore on his vision of a truly liberated India.
To paraphrase the great Du Bois: This is not the United States gone mad; this is not aberration nor insanity; this is the United States; this is the real soul of empire — naked, drenched in blood, built by blood money; honest, for once.
The US is so deeply mired in an unwinnable battle from the Levant to the Persian Gulf that only its adversaries in China, Russia, and Iran can bail it out.
If as a global human community we allow the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States, it will be a world-historic blow to the freedom of thought, conscience, and expression. It will be a victory for secretive, abusive governments and corporate institutions around the world.
Tagore’s words, “Be on watch, India” and asking people “to stand before the proud and the powerful/ With your white robe of simpleness”, are of greater relevance today, when the arrival of 2024 is being celebrated, than when he composed those words to mark the advent of the year 1900.

Nehru’s fantastic effort to raise India from what Tagore called the ‘mud and filth’ left behind by the British has now been replaced with the Indian people being pushed back into that same ‘mud and filth’ of ignorance, obscurantism, dis-empowerment, unfreedom and above all communal hatred.
