In capitalism, environmental destruction, global warming, and our collective ecocide are inextricably linked to a key institution of capital: the Corporation. Be it the 2008 Global Financial Crisis or the corona pandemic or the environmental crisis, corporate capitalism has played a key role.
The author is not referring to the war in Ukraine, but to the capitalist war on livable ecology. There’s no war and peace, no social justice, no democracy, no demilitarization, on a dead planet, whether it is frozen in nuclear winter or melted by climate change.
The U.S. government seeks to bring Assange to the U.S. to be tried under the Espionage Act for soliciting, obtaining, and then publishing classified information–in other words, precisely the work of an investigative journalist. It is journalism, therefore, that Assange is being prosecuted for.
At a time when India seems to be ready to hand over its railways, highways, ports and pipelines to private hands on lease, these frauds come as a rude reminder of how the government is gambling with the savings of ordinary citizens.
What we have heard about chemical waste dumping is only the tip of the iceberg of the amounts of wastes already buried or dumped into rivers, lakes, seas and oceans in violation of the law or with the consent of local and national authorities.
The Doomsday Clock is set every year by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The Clock has become a universally recognized indicator of the world’s vulnerability to catastrophe from nuclear weapons, climate change, and disruptive technologies in other domains. This year too, the Clock remains the closest it has ever been to civilization-ending apocalypse.
Socialists should be clear that the cause of the climate crisis is the capitalist system and its incessant drive to accumulate profits, and that the only way to solve the crisis is to struggle for a socialist world where human need, including a sustainable relation to nature, comes before private greed.
President Ortega of Nicaragua has demonstrated through his continued victories, and through his forming of new alliances with countries like China, that times have changed; that it is now the US, with its crumbling empire, which must watch on the sidelines as countries like tiny Nicaragua chart their own futures.
The biggest culprit for rising prices that’s not being talked about is the increasing economic concentration of the American economy in the hands of a relative few giant big corporations with the power to raise prices.
Environmental activists and scholars talk about the movements, triumphs and trends they’re most heartened by this year.
