When it comes to countries in Asia building socialism, not too many think of Laos. This mountainous country sits in the center of Southeast Asia and has lived through French and Japanese colonialism, civil war, and years of military attacks by the United States.
Over 90 signatories have penned an open letter to the Law Minister seeking an explanation from Rijiju on the legal basis of his “open threat in a public forum” to some retired judges.

Perhaps we Indians may learn from the example of our beloved Israelis, and wake up to the unabashedly voiced desire to curtail the highest judiciary.
All of India’s diversities exist because of multilingualism and multiculturalism, and arguably, what binds all of us is “Indianness”, which is the outcome of our allegiance to the Indian Constitution.
Revived democratic struggle in Peru is well along into a second act. Following the parliamentary coup on December 7 that removed democratically elected President Pedro Castillo, embittered Peruvians occupied Lima and faced violent repression. The struggles renewed again on March 1.
Tamil Nadu’s decision to address the Indian Govt. as the Union Govt instead of the Central Govt is directed at halting the growing attrition of Indian federalism. Tamil activist Aazhi Senthilnathan says that this change in nomenclature was necessitated by the threat to the federal structure and autonomy of the state.
Those courageous voices would bring the republic back to the norms envisioned in the Constitution.
Sociologists have long believed that urbanisation could signal the end of the caste system. B.R. Ambedkar encouraged people from marginalised castes to migrate to urban areas. Unfortunately, however, cities have their own way of perpetuating these inequalities.
If we are to regain a democratic future, we need to do everything in our power to stem that rot in the hearts of our children.
