Not only is the gig economy devastating its workers, but there are ongoing efforts to expand the model to nearly all American workplaces. It is estimated that 36 percent of the US workforce are gig, contract, freelance and temporary workers. And the numbers are only growing.
The message from the recent Congress of the Communist Party of China is continuation of ongoing restructuring of the economy toward capitalism, albeit on Chinese terms and keeping the “commanding heights” of the economy in state hands.
Bad loan problems at state-run banks have so far been resolved through massive taxpayer-funded bailouts. There must be a revaluation of a broken credit culture that virtually protects big borrowers.

The climate movement in the Global North needs to realise this and embrace a path of international solidarity.
