The nations of the planet must get their act together and do something extremely big very soon to tame the climate monster, or suffer unfathomable adversity, meaning some advanced stage of apocalypse which unfortunately has already started to strut its stuff.
When it comes to Africa, France has always been clear about its plan to dominate and exploit. Also, while other western powers, including the U.S. have participated in neo-colonial projects, French efforts have included an extra dose of nasty. But now the situation seems to be changing.
Walter Rodney wrote, “The development of Europe [was] part of the same dialectical process in which Africa was underdeveloped.” In recent decades, Canada has played an outsized role in this process of underdevelopment – particularly in Burkina Faso.

Collectively, we need to imagine a world in which we as Americans are no longer the foremost merchants of death, in which we don’t imagine ourselves as the eternal global police force, in which we don’t spend as much on our military as the next 10 countries combined.
When they tell me, a Brazilian, that there is no democracy in Cuba, I descend from the abstraction of words to reality. How many photos and news have been seen or are seen of Cubans in misery, beggars scattered on the sidewalks, children abandoned in the streets, families under the viaducts?

Until we pressure lawmakers to repeal that 2001 AUMF and end the forever conflicts that have gone with it, America’s wars will ensure that our democracy and the rule of law as we know it will make any promises of peace, self-defense, and justice ring hollow.
Although Richard Lewontin is no longer with us, in another sense he shall continue to live on. Through his works, Lewontin will continue to inspire and educate a new generation of scientists and of revolutionaries.
