Can India’s Rich Wealth Creators Boost the Economy to $5 Trillion?

    ByJanataWeekly September 22, 2019November 6, 2020

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Independence Day, said that wealth creation is a national service and that wealth creators should not be viewed with suspicion. Furthermore, he added, only when wealth is created can it be distributed. These statements come at a time when the…

Why Aggregate Employment in India Is Shrinking

    ByJanataWeekly September 22, 2019November 6, 2020

One of the major promises on which the 2014 elections were won was massive job creation. Even after its stunning victory in 2019, primarily fought on the national security plank, among the first things the new Narendra Modi government did was to set up a cabinet committee to create jobs. How successful has it been?…

What the Centre Needs to Do if it Wants to Tackle the Economic Slowdown

    ByJanataWeekly September 22, 2019November 6, 2020

Only a few weeks ago, the central government was talking grandly about India reaching a $5-trillion economy and refusing to recognise the severe slowdown India is going through. (This is not such a grand ambition when compared with China, which is often portrayed as India’s competitor, because by 2025, China’s economy is expected to achieve…

We are Not Fooled by the Hong Kong Protests

    ByJanataWeekly September 22, 2019November 6, 2020

Several people around the world are confused about the protests going on in Hong Kong. Whenever the corporate media and politicians, especially people like Marco Rubio (US Republican senator), applaud a social movement, it is a red flag that the protests are not a progressive people’s movement, but serve other purposes. Is this really a…

Hindi Imposition will Kill the Imagination of a Nation with a Hundred Tongues

    ByJanataWeekly September 22, 2019November 6, 2020

15 years ago, when I was waiting for my class, a student came to me and congratulated me. “What is the occasion?”, I wondered aloud. It was not my birthday which in any case my students would not be aware of. Those were pre-Facebook days. That I was asking for the occasion was something my…

Who Are the Real Invaders on Planet Earth?

    ByJanataWeekly September 15, 2019November 6, 2020

He crossed the border without permission or, as far as I could tell, documentation of any sort. I’m speaking about Donald Trump’s uninvited, unasked-for invasion of my personal space. He’s there daily, often hourly, whether I like it or not, and I don’t have a Department of Homeland Security to separate him from his children,…

    Kashmir Caged: A Fact-Finding Report

    ByJanataWeekly September 15, 2019November 6, 2020

We spent five days (9-13 August 2019) traveling extensively in Kashmir. Our visit began on 9 August 2019 – four days after the Indian government abrogated Articles 370 and 35A, dissolved the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and bifurcated it into two Union Territories. When we arrived in Srinagar on 9 August, we found the…

Janata Weekly

Janata Weekly is India’s oldest independent socialist weekly.

Ever since its founding in 1946, Janata has voiced its principled dissent against all conduct and practice that is detrimental to the cherished values of nationalism, democracy, secularism and socialism, while upholding the integrity and the ethical norms of healthy journalism. For more than seventy years now, week after week, it has continued to analyse the changes taking place in the country and the world from a socialist standpoint, and thus promote the spread of socialist ideology in the country.
