French Strikes and Popular Mobilizations Continue, Contesting Not Only Retirement Rollback, But Also Police Brutality and Authoritarian Politics

    ByKevin B. Anderson April 16, 2023April 19, 2023

France has reached a new stage with the 2023 demonstrations. Some are comparing the present situation to 1968. The difference between 1968 and 2023 is that today there are no vanguard parties like the left in 1968, that ultimately betrayed the struggle. The other difference is that …

Laos: Building Socialism from Scratch After Colonialism and Imperialist War

    ByMichael Christopher April 16, 2023April 19, 2023

When it comes to countries in Asia building socialism, not too many think of Laos. This mountainous country sits in the center of Southeast Asia and has lived through French and Japanese colonialism, civil war, and years of military attacks by the United States.

The Intertwined Food and Climate Emergencies: Culpability

    ByJudith Deutsch April 16, 2023April 19, 2023

Contrasting images come to mind when it comes to hunger and climate: a world in which a child under age ten dies of hunger every five seconds and the oligarchs of agri-food and finance decide every day who on this planet will die and who will live. This article is about loss of both morality and of thinking.

The Dollar Is in Trouble! Here Are 7 Signs that Global De-Dollarization Has Just Shifted Into Overdrive

    ByMichael Snyder April 16, 2023April 19, 2023

For decades, the U.S. dollar was the undisputed king of global currencies, but now dramatic changes are happening. Much of the planet is preparing for a future in which the U.S. dollar will be far less important than it is right now.

Why I Took My Teen Daughters to Lahore’s Aurat March This Year

    BySara Arshad April 16, 2023April 19, 2023

Lahore teacher and writer Sara Arshad had never attended the Aurat March in Pakistan nor allowed her two daughters to do so, fearing the intense backlash that the feminist protest receives every year. But this Women’s Day, she took the leap of faith with her teens in tow.

We Are Living Through a Paradigm Shift in Our Understanding of Human Evolution

    ByJan Ritch-Frel interviews Professor Chris Stringer April 16, 2023April 19, 2023

There’s a paradigm shift underway in our understanding of the past four million years of human evolution: ours is a story that includes combinations with other Homo species, spread unevenly across today’s populations—not a neat and linear evolutionary progression.

IPCC Report Fails on Equity and Urgency

    ByKevin Anderson April 9, 2023April 11, 2023

The report claims that, to maintain a 50:50 chance of warming not exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, CO₂ emissions must be cut to “net-zero” by the “early 2050s.” However, a more rigorous analysis of the report’s data gives a zero CO₂ date of 2040.

Budget 2023–24: What Is in it for the People? Part 1: The External Sector

    ByNeeraj Jain April 9, 2023April 11, 2023

The first article in our budget analysis series for this year. We begin our discussion of the Union Budget 2023–24 with a brief discussion of India’s external accounts situation. Amazingly, the budget speech does not contain a single line as regards the country’s external accounts situation.

Janata Weekly is India’s oldest independent socialist weekly.

Ever since its founding in 1946, Janata has voiced its principled dissent against all conduct and practice that is detrimental to the cherished values of nationalism, democracy, secularism and socialism, while upholding the integrity and the ethical norms of healthy journalism.
