Once the producer of 90% of the world’s soybeans, China today has become the world’s biggest importer. This change is the result of manipulation of soybean production, supply and marketing chain by multinational food magnates.

The far right continues to grow in Europe, with extremist parties gaining ground in Italy, France and Sweden.
I do not want those waging war by rhetoric and display to win. I do not want the war waged by fanatical neoconservative ideologues to win. I do not want the imperium to win. I do not want the West to win so long as it insists intolerantly that the rest of the world observe its diktats.
Rising competition for many of the world’s important crops is sending increasing amounts toward uses other than directly feeding people. These competing uses include making biofuels; and converting crops into processing ingredients, such as livestock meal and hydrogenated oils.
Timor-Leste represents a new case in the dawn of the twenty-first century on how the IMF imposed a top-down neoliberal macroeconomic infrastructure and reform project from scratch.
There is not a single case of China pressuring countries to take unsustainable loans; nor does China use national assets as collateral. In fact, China’s loan conditions are typically far less onerous than those of the West.
PM Modi has stressed that India will use its full capacities to address humanity’s biggest crises, including climate, terrorism and pandemics. The question is: will our actions match our stated intentions? What does India’s recent past and present tell us?
The Tamils of the island of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) belong to that category of victims of major human rights violations who only few in the world want to acknowledge as victims.
As we end a difficult year, let’s pause to remind ourselves of some of the positive changes that happened in 2022 that should inspire us to do more in the year to come. While some are only partial gains, they are all steps towards a more just, peaceful and sustainable world.
