Since May 3, 2023, the violence between Meitei and the Kuki-Zos has claimed over 220 lives and uprooted over 60,000 people. The Meira Paibis have been active enablers of the violence, aiding and assisting armed Meitei groups. Apart from the Arambai Tenggol, banned insurgent groups have seen a resurgence.
In a statement marking one year of what it calls “genocidal violence” in Manipur, the civil rights network Forum Against Corporatization and Militarization (FACAM) has claimed that the whole “conflict” is premised on the fact that the state is rich in natural resources.
The Meiteis, Pangals, and Kukis of Manipur, all extended support to the INA and its struggle. The Naga people were not an exception either. This legacy of unity and amity was sadly lost in independent India. Instead, the North East, including Manipur, became the country’s chronically restive region.
Over the course of a harrowing four months in India’s sensitive border state of Manipur, the once-coexisting communities of Meitei and Kuki have descended into a state of irreparable enmity. The violence erupted on May 3 and continues.
Outraged by the appalling violence against two women in Manipur, Gujarati poet Mahashweta Jani has written a powerful poem.
“Silence Over Manipur Lays Bare the Crisis of Indian Identity”: Peripheral states are often seen to be not really ‘Indian’ and to be held by militarised force. Also: “Double-Engine: The Union and State Government Must Answer for Manipur”.
Right-wing politics has been using this tactic since its inception — create a sense of insecurity among the majority community that they are falling in numbers, losing out their resources to ‘encroachers’, and are in direct attack from the ‘violent’ minority.
What’s chilling is the cynicism of the top man running the country. Why is the prime minister unmoved?
