A lone woman’s painful struggle for justice, and the recent remission granted to 11 convicts who had assaulted her during the 2002 Gujarat riots, sits, disturbingly, at the centre of this poem.
I had great faith in the judiciary. Alas, I have lost it. No sensible Indian expected the topmost court to make extremely disparaging remarks against Teesta Setalvad and RB Sreekumar and accuse them of a pre-planned conspiracy to harm PM Modi! Also: “When Accused Become Innocent and Innocent are Made Accused.”
Several top environmental experts have opposed the proposals by the Govt of India, to amend environment, forest and biodiversity protection laws, as also laws regulating pollution control, under the “influence and financing by foreign governments and international financial institutions”.
Was Friday the 24th of June, 2022, a day of coincidences? I ask because on this day the Supreme Courts of the world’s two largest democracies gave two judgments that are an assault on human rights, individual choice and freedom and, have “stood the Constitution on its head.” Also: Zakia Jafri Case: Can Rule of Law Survive if We Crush Those Fighting for It?
