In 1926, Gandhi had given a call for boycott of newspapers spreading hate: “India would lose nothing if 90 per cent of the papers were to cease today,” Gandhi had said then; Also: “When Journalism Becomes the Flagbearer of Hate, Can the Resistance to It Be Anything but Political?”

One after another, journalists in Kerala are being booked for just doing their job, which the government sees as doing ‘anti-government’ stories, much like the government at the Centre.
We celebrate World Press Freedom Day in May as a reminder that the role of news organizations is to speak truth to power. It’s an occasion to remember three people who exemplify the need to speak the truth: Daniel Ellsberg of Pentagon Papers fame, Julian Assange of WikiLeaks; and Chelsea Manning.

The BJP-led government continues to aim for narrative control of the media. Since print and television news have already been coopted and no longer pose a problem, the effort now is focused on controlling the feisty digital media through various formal and informal instruments.
The criminalisation of journalism and human rights activities in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as other parts of India, must stop. Freedom of expression and the right to know are fundamental rights. A free press is essential for giving people a voice and making information available to them.
While Javed Akhtar’s remarks at the event are significant, much more significant is the progressive environment the fair provides.
The former NDTV anchor says that Adani’s takeover of NDTV is not a normal takeover, but was aimed at silencing him, for which Adani spent thousands of crores. Ravish says that he will continue to speak – speak out – through his channel on YouTube.
