India today, is enveloped in darkness! As the nation embroils itself from one issue to another, the burden is felt by the ordinary citizen, as never before and in more ways than one. In these dark times, the people of India cry out in one voice, from the depths of their being “Let there be Light”!
Rishi Sunak has become the PM of UK and India’s ‘bhaktmandali’ is celebrating. Celebrating those who had nothing to do with India except some relations hundreds years back is nothing but pure hypocrisy of those who do not acknowledge the contributions of minorities in our nation building.
Majority community Indians have prayer privileges that many of our fellow citizens (especially Muslims, Christians and Dalits) can only dream of. In the year gone by, prayer – that universal act common to all religions – has been criminalised like never before.
India suffered not one partition but many. On the one hand India was partitioned into two nation states. But along with the country, two major regions – Punjab and Bengal, evolved through many centuries, were also partitioned – this partition of the regions was probably much more serious with extremely tragic consequences.
In April 1941, communal riots broke out in Ahmedabad. Gandhiji’s secretary, Mahadev Desai, wrote a long report on the riots, which remains unpublished. Guha discusses this report, as it is not only very moving, but also speaks directly to the communal situation in India today.
Hindu nationalists frequently anoint themselves the Indigenous people of India. This identity claim—informed by upper-caste sensibilities and a core part of Hindutva mythology—is misleading and harmful to numerous minoritized Indian communities. It undermines the status of Adivasis.
In contrast to all the great Hindu preachers, we have people today – some incredibly clad in saffron – constantly tormenting and verbally and physically attacking minorities.
No state, whether it is Iran, India or any other, has the right to tell women what to wear.
Akeel Bilgrami speaks on the relationship between Gandhi and Marx, issues of modernity, academic philosophy in India, secularism, caste and current politics in India, the Hindutva political challenge and ways of resistance, and the importance of Left politics.
