The Government of India by not caring about its very own chained people being dropped down by a foreign military plane can pretend it is an ostrich, but the picture of an India shrivelled and grovelling and further trying to ‘normalise Indian hate’ tells its own story.
Recent reports say that the government scheme of giving dry ration to 800 million Indians is set to continue for another three months. In the absence of any official estimate, this is the closest official estimate for the numbers of those who are living below the poverty line.
The project to change the memory of the history of a nation is a big one. Hate-filled prime-time TV debates and WhatsApp messages with a singular focus on anything that divides Indians on religious lines are finding a perfect resonance in official statements and actions.
A recent report by International IDEA, an inter-governmental think tank, finds that “70% of the global population now live either in non-democratic regimes or in democratically backsliding countries”. The report cites Brazil, India and the United States as the biggest backsliders globally.
