The employment rate among youth has declined from around 53% in 2004-2005 to 40% in 2022-2023. The fall in employment rate occurred alongside a fall in youth labour force participation rate. Clearly, the youth are increasingly falling out of the labour force as they are not finding work: they are becoming “discouraged workers”.
The employment rate fell to 36% in 2022 from 43% in 2016. This was a 7% fall in the employment rate in a country that has the largest young population in the world. This employment rate is much lower than the world average of about 60%.
Employment trends are dismal under the ‘double engine government’ of Modi and Adityanath. Several other claims made in ads do not appear to hold up.
