Concentrated wealth and power are undermining democracy. Here’s what Joe Biden ought to be saying and doing about it.
Trump is threatening to destroy the core institutions of American democracy and to rule as authoritarians in other countries do — authoritarians whom he praises.
Both explanations offered by the corporate-financial establishment — for the rise of Trumpism and for widening inequalities — leave out the increasing concentration of political power in the corporate and financial elite, which has been able to influence the rules on which the economy runs.
The world is coming to be dominated by the richest and most powerful people on the globe, who aren’t accountable to anyone for anything — for facts, truth, science or the common good. That’s Elon’s dream.
Why have so many Americans been willing to sacrifice American democracy to Trump? And, what’s happened to wealth and power, and how the dramatic consolidation of both at the top of America continues to fuel Trumpism.
America’s wealthiest, most powerful, and fiercest anti-union corporation — with the second-largest workforce in the nation (union-busting Walmart being the largest) — lost out to a group of warehouse workers who voted to form a union, by a remarkable 2,654 to 2,131 on April 1.
The biggest culprit for rising prices that’s not being talked about is the increasing economic concentration of the American economy in the hands of a relative few giant big corporations with the power to raise prices.
It is based on three giant myths: Tax cuts for corporations and the rich create more and better jobs; Tax cuts for big corporations and the rich spur economic growth; Deregulation spurs economic growth. It is time to debunk them, once and for all.
At this juncture, between a global pandemic and the promise of a post-pandemic world, and between the administrations of Trump and Biden, we would be well-served by changing the economic paradigm from trickle down to build up.
With internal polls showing that Trump is losing the November elections, he is desperate to put the economy back on track, irespective of its consequences for the people.
