Despite all the manipulations done by the Modi Government with the GDP figures, the economic slowdown has been so persistent that now, finally, the official figures also admit that economy began slowing down before the pandemic.
The pandemic is not responsible for the unemployment crisis in the country, it has only worsened it. An estimation of the extent of unemployment in the country before the pandemic struck.
The Modi Government is worried that if it is forced to withdraw the farm bills under pressure of the farmers’ movement, it may inspire people’s struggles against other elements of neoliberalism imposed on India by the World Bank – such as cut in education and health subsidies.
The struggle against neoliberal reforms in agriculture would not only make farming sustainable and profitable, it would also lead to the creation of crores of jobs in agriculture. Therefore, the struggle of the farmers is closely connected to the struggle of the youth for adequate means of livelihood.
The farm laws will lead to the corporatisation of agriculture and its control by foreign agribusiness corporations. Our very food sovereignty and thus the sovereignty of the country itself is at stake.
