The agreement announced on Friday in Beijing regarding the normalisation of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran is a historic event. China’s mediation signifies that we are witnessing a profound shift of the tectonic plates in the geopolitics of the 21st century.
Surely, there is a pall of gloom in the western media lately about the war storms gathering on the horizon. There have been reports of more Russian successes. The Ukrainian defence line is cracking through which an elephant can pass to the steppes en route to the Dnieper River.
Developments on the ground in Ukraine are showing that Washington’s best-laid plans are floundering. There are also growing signs of disunity on Ukraine issue among the European countries and between the latter and the US. Meanwhile, the Russian offensive continues to accelerate.
The seeds of peace lie in choices that are made. Looking back, indeed, Russia’s decision to vacate the occupation of Kherson on the western bank of the Dnieper River was a masterstroke. Also: Russia Strategises with Iran for the Long Haul in Ukraine.
For sure, there is a waft of fresh, soft scents in the air. US Defence Secretary Austin broke the ice on Thursday in consultation with British Defence Secretary Wallace and with Biden’s approval. And Russia voted for a US resolution imposing sanctions against yet another country in the Global South.
The Biden Administration is establishing a narrative that the recent OPEC decision to cut oil production by two million tonnes is a geopolitical “aligning” by Saudi Arabia and Russia. It deflects attention from the humiliating defeat of President Biden’s personal diplomacy with Saudi Arabia.
As the balance of power shifts again in Ukraine, its reverberations will impact the very unity of the EU project.
The chief of Russia’s foreign intelligence Sergey Naryshkin has recently written a riveting essay on the 75th anniversary of the Central Intelligence Agency. Most certainly, it serves to remind the Russian people and foreigners alike that nothing has been forgotten, nothing forgiven.
