The United States calls Cuba’s medical internationalism “human trafficking” — but it’s really an internationalist lifeline for the Global South.
In 2017, the Cuban government approved the ‘State Plan to Confront Climate Change’, known in Cuba as ‘Tarea Vida’ (Life Task). With a projection up to the year 2100, ‘Tarea Vida’ is the world’s only truly long-term state plan to address climate change.
Cuba has now become the first country in the world to roll out Covid-19 vaccines for children as young as two, and is among the few countries worldwide to be vaccinating under 12-year-olds. By the end of the year the island will be among the first countries in the world to fully vaccinate its population.
For decades, commentators predicted that Cuba’s socialist model couldn’t survive without the USSR or Fidel Castro. They were wrong – and even in the face of continued sanctions, its unique system endures.
