José Pedro Castillo, a 51-year-old teacher of a rural school, assumed the charge of the presidency of Peru on July 28. This is the first time that Peru will be ruled by a peasant, a person who belongs to a sector that has been oppressed for so many centuries.

Ever since its founding in 1946, Janata has voiced its principled dissent against all conduct and practice that is detrimental to the cherished values of nationalism, democracy, secularism and socialism, while upholding the integrity and the ethical norms of healthy journalism.
