The Opposition and critics have alleged the ban is the latest chapter in the Adityanath government’s hostilities against Muslims in the state.
When Rahul Gandhi launched his offensive in Parliament, one of his main allegations was that the Modi government tweaked norms to help Adani take control of six Indian airports. The Centre had brushed aside red flags raised by the finance ministry and the Niti Aayog.
Few people in the nearby villages believe the project has made their lives any better. Even many of those who have found employment in and around the project seem largely lukewarm to it, as the jobs are poorly paid and exploitative, and say that they were perhaps better off without them.
Punjabi poet Gurbhajan Gill says, “It may have started with farmers, but now this has become an outburst of anger against Modi’s arrogance by all sections of the society in the state.” Support for the movement cuts across community lines in the state.
