The Modi Government has unashamedly transferred enormous amounts of public funds and public wealth to the country’s biggest corporations. This has been the sole aim of PM Modi’s economic policies of the past 10 years. This article presents a brief overview of some of these transfers.
Ever since Modi took over the reins of the Central Government in 2014, his government has been embroiled in innumerable scams, from demonetisation to the PM Cares scam to whitewashing the corruption cases against opposition politicians after they join the BJP. But the electoral bonds scam puts all previous scams in the shade.
Inequality levels have reached historical highs under the Billionaire Raj. These extreme inequalities and their close links with social injustices can no longer be ignored. A comprehensive wealth tax package would be an important step towards a more equitable growth path for India.
Modi targeting Muslim community of our country in his campaign speeches have no parallel in the electoral history of independent India. Jawaharlal Nehru had warned that employing communal rhetoric for votes would put the unity and integrity of the people and country in peril.
A “high-powered US trade delegation” recently visited India to “explore opportunities in the country’s huge agribusiness sector and further promote American products among India’s rising middle class” – and this was uncritically celebrated by the Indian elite press.
Though the union government has pumped in almost Rs 40,000 crore into the flagship Namami Gange programme since 2014, several concerns – including dysfunctional sewage treatment plants and bad governance – abound.
Since May 3, 2023, the violence between Meitei and the Kuki-Zos has claimed over 220 lives and uprooted over 60,000 people. The Meira Paibis have been active enablers of the violence, aiding and assisting armed Meitei groups. Apart from the Arambai Tenggol, banned insurgent groups have seen a resurgence.
Women who work as ASHAs are still considered volunteers and not paid salaries, but are given a honorarium which is very low. And yet national and different state governments keep increasing their workload.
The former Supreme Court judge says that the Supreme Court has erred and cannot be proud of its Kashmir judgement, in which it upheld the Union government’s move to read down Article 370.
Nehru emerged from the national movement which had worked to unite all Indians. The leadership appealed to the higher instincts of people to work towards a common goal of living in harmony and progress…. In brief, Nehru’s era was transformative in spite of the enormous difficulties that existed. It paved the path to the nation having 224 times more capital today compared to 1950.
