Although communal forces were dealt with sternly in the first few years after Independence, limiting them to the fringe, they have, over the years, received tacit support from the political class, helping them grow their base over the last few decades.
The Modi government’s economic policy has often been termed, rightly, as being utterly callous towards the people, and utterly devoted to serving the interest of “cronies”. But it is “cronyism” sanctified by the idea of building up a (Hindu) “nation”.
Tamil Nadu’s decision to address the Indian Govt. as the Union Govt instead of the Central Govt is directed at halting the growing attrition of Indian federalism. Tamil activist Aazhi Senthilnathan says that this change in nomenclature was necessitated by the threat to the federal structure and autonomy of the state.
Those courageous voices would bring the republic back to the norms envisioned in the Constitution.
