The Biden Administration is establishing a narrative that the recent OPEC decision to cut oil production by two million tonnes is a geopolitical “aligning” by Saudi Arabia and Russia. It deflects attention from the humiliating defeat of President Biden’s personal diplomacy with Saudi Arabia.
As a result of this, the world’s sources of freshwater, representing one of the planetary boundaries designated by natural science, are being monopolized as natural capital by relatively few companies who will be able to charge market rents for the ecosystem services.
The Socialists had been a significant force in American politics before they were so ruthlessly crushed in the 1920s. If the Socialist Party hadn’t been so hobbled, maybe they would have pushed the mainstream parties into creating a stronger social safety net that people today take for granted in countries like Canada or Denmark.
Despite the well-known limitations of gross domestic product (GDP) – the world’s headline indicator of economic progress – growth in GDP remains to this day the predominant measure of progress across the world.
Just as in the 1930s and ’60s, America is suffering a moral crisis. We have to decide which side we are on: hate and exclusion, or justice, inclusion, and democracy?
